St. Michael’s Cemetery and Pedestrian Safety at Risk

Over the past two years, St. Michael’s Cemetery has suffered more damage from vehicle crashes than in the last 50 years combined. Seven accidents have caused more than $80,000 in damages, destroying sections of the wrought iron fence, historic grave markers, and burial sites.

But this is more than just property damage—it's a serious safety concern.

A Dangerous Pattern

  • A sidewalk wraps around the cemetery, meant to protect pedestrians.

  • Cars are crossing over this sidewalk before crashing into the cemetery, creating a major hazard for anyone walking nearby.

  • No barriers or slowdown measures are in place to prevent future incidents.

  • Poor lighting and lack of clear traffic control make the problem worse, especially at night.

What’s Being Done?

  • The St. Michael’s Cemetery Foundation is working on costly repairs.

  • The City of Pensacola and FDOT are adding painted curbs, improved lighting, and new signage, but no protective barriers have been approved.

  • Insurance only covers part of the damage, and repair costs are outpacing available funds.

What Can Be Done Now?

  • Contact City Councilwoman Allison Patton (District 6) and ask for stronger pedestrian protections, traffic control measures, and physical barriers.

  • Donate to the St. Michael’s Cemetery Foundation to help with ongoing repairs.

  • Spread the word—share this information with others who care about Pensacola’s history and community safety.

This cemetery is not just a historic site—it’s a public space where people walk, learn, and pay their respects. If action isn’t taken soon, someone could get seriously hurt.
