History of the Seville Square Historic District

Nearly three centuries ago, Spanish explorers established a small outpost on the pristine, sandy shores of Pensacola Bay. This primitive fort, known then as Presidio San Miguel de Panzacola, would later be laid out as a public square by the British Empire as they established a new city in the Americas. Over time — and spanning the rule of five different countries — a historic, diverse, and flourishing neighborhood would be established at the heart of Pensacola, America’s first European settlement.

Today, that neighborhood is known as the Seville Square Historic District and spans more than 100 acres in the urban core of downtown Pensacola.

The neighborhood’s boundaries extend from Tarragona Street to the west, Bayfront Parkway to the south, Garden and Chase streets to the north, and Ninth Avenue to the east (excluding the newly-established Aragon Neighborhood).
